Former Things
“Remember ye not the former things” — the command redirects attention from what has been toward what God announces.
A way in the wilderness. Rivers in the desert.
A promise that the barren place is not beyond God's reach.
18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
“Remember ye not the former things” — the command redirects attention from what has been toward what God announces.
“Now it shall spring forth” — God's declaration calls for recognition, not merely anticipation.
“A way in the wilderness” — a path where the landscape appears to offer none.
“Rivers in the desert” — life-giving provision in a place associated with scarcity.
In Isaiah 43, the LORD addresses His people and speaks of redemption and deliverance. This promise belongs first to that prophetic context.
The passage contrasts former mighty acts with a new work God declares He will do. The call is to perceive His action.
As a devotional application, ask where old expectations may obscure attention to God's guidance, without assuming every personal plan is a divine promise.
