Paul’s opening thesis frames the whole vision: the gospel reveals the righteousness of God “from faith to faith” (1:17). The chapters move from the universal need for salvation to the greatness of God’s mercy.
THE GOSPEL.
THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD.
THE DEPTH OF MERCY.

CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER · KJV EXCERPTSTHE GOSPEL REVEALED
Paul declares the gospel of Christ, righteousness revealed by faith, and humanity’s accountability before God.
“The just shall live by faith.”
THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE
God judges according to truth, not outward status; true inward obedience matters more than outward religious identity.
“For there is no respect of persons with God.”
ALL UNDER SIN
Jew and Gentile alike are under sin. God’s righteousness is manifested through faith in Jesus Christ; boasting is excluded.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
ABRAHAM BELIEVED
Abraham is presented as an example of righteousness reckoned by faith before circumcision, and of hope in God’s promise.
“Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”
PEACE THROUGH CHRIST
Being justified by faith, believers have peace with God through Jesus Christ; Paul contrasts Adam’s offence with Christ’s gift.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
DEAD TO SIN
Union with Christ in His death and resurrection calls believers to refuse sin’s reign and yield themselves to righteousness.
“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”
THE INNER STRUGGLE
Paul describes the law’s goodness, sin’s misuse of the commandment, and the struggle of desiring good yet encountering sin.
“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”
LIFE IN THE SPIRIT
The Spirit brings life and adoption; creation groans, the Spirit helps in weakness, and nothing separates believers from God’s love in Christ.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,”
GOD’S SOVEREIGN PURPOSE
Paul grieves for Israel and considers God’s purpose in election, mercy, and the distinction between natural descent and promise.
“I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy,”
THE WORD OF FAITH
Paul expresses his desire for Israel’s salvation and emphasizes righteousness by faith, confession, belief, and the hearing of God’s word.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
MERCY & THE MYSTERY
Paul describes a remnant by grace, warns Gentiles against boasting, speaks of Israel’s future mercy, and ends in worship.
“For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things:”
